24 FRAMES PER SECOND
Short film and film installation (2023)

Director's notes:
This installation was part of the art exhibition CAVE and resulted from an invitation to create a film related to the show's theme. I had always wanted to make a film that people could watch while dancing rather than sitting. I was glad to see that some felt invited by the film to dance during this exhibition.
I see two projections, facing each other, mirrored. On one wall, the oldest paintings in the world, dated 30,000 years ago. On the other, people dancing to techno—just as we do in clubs, our contemporary caves.
When I first saw these ancient paintings, certain questions came to mind: How long has humanity been fascinated by images? Some of these paintings were even drawn to evoke a sense of movement, making me think that cinema seems much older than the Lumière brothers. This video installation explores this primal drive to create art and the concept of time—not just the 30,000 years separating the two projections but also "time" as the raw material of cinema itself. "Film is the sculpting of time," Tarkovsky once said.
In this film, the characters dance to Nine Out of Ten Movie Stars Make Me Cry, a song by Caetano Veloso. He was part of Tropicália, a Brazilian movement in the 1960s that fused traditional Brazilian music with foreign styles, reappropriating influences and transforming them into something new. It was a practice of remixing as an aesthetic, ethical, and political act. Inspired by this, I invited the talented DJ Bruno Afterall to remix the song into techno—a double remix. The second projection in the installation is also a remix: an edited version of Herzog's Cave of Forgotten Dreams, designed to create a dialogue with our film.
Both films play in a continuous loop, positioning spectators at the center of the room—between the ancient paintings and people dancing to techno, bridging past and present through movement and sound.
